Eye of the Beholder 1 (GoG Release)

Post by Marc »

Hi all,

after reading the DOSBox Guide from erfg12, I had the sudden urge to play some old stuff and remembered my very first role-playing computergame: "Eye of the Beholder 1". The first dungeon crawler on the PC. 8-)

Features:
  • Invulnerability
  • no more food needed
  • edit all character stats
  • let items spawn in inventory
  • teleport party through editing the x/y coordinates
Some notes:
  1. The item-list is not an exact science. Some values change their meaning depending on the area you are currently in. A dart can sometime be a stone, for example... could not find out how the devs decide what is what. But the useful items are almost always working, anyway.
  2. The Hitpoints are "signed bytes", so 127 is the maximum health a character can get. 128 is MINUS 128, so it blows the character out of its shoes
  3. Be warned about the script which fills the food-bar, this can have side effects. The more secure way is to just edit the values of all characters to 100 and freeze it :)
  4. since this is an old-school game, there is no automapping. Which, in my opinion, adds to the feeling. However, if you'd like to have automapping, take a look at a handy tool called "[Link]".
Edit: as found out by MightyAtom, you might have to add +D88 to character's offset if the character editor does not show you the correct data.

best regards and have fun,
Marc

How to use this cheat table?
  1. Install Cheat Engine
  2. Double-click the .CT file in order to open it.
  3. Click the PC icon in Cheat Engine in order to select the game process.
  4. Keep the list.
  5. Activate the trainer options by checking boxes or setting values from 0 to 1

Eye of the Beholder.. Now there's a blast from the past :) Perhaps one day I should re-play it again, thanks for the table.

The food script for some reason seems to change the aspect ratio of the map. I am really not sure how to explain it.

Nevermind table does not work, crashes when enemy makes a hit.

Awesome! Food still seems to be dropping, but invulnerability works like a charm. Much appreciated.

A little bit unspecific.
Re-Installed the game with the GoG Installer, DosBox Version is still 0.74-2.1, table works.
All values can be edited, scripts can be checked.

I'm struggling to get the cheat table to actually do anything. Any suggestions?

Sometimes I get the feeling of getting trolled. :?

Sorry, but "does not work" is way to unspecific. You wouldn't drive to a car repair, slam the keys on the desk, telling them "defect!" and walk out of the door, would you? :P

Als Recifense wrote [Link]:
  1. Download the table
  2. Run Cheat Engine
  3. Run the game
  4. ALT+TAB and via Cheat Engine choose the game on the process list
  5. Cheat Engine will ask if you want to load the associated Cheat table. Just click on YES
  6. If the table is in a different folder, just press Control+O and guide Cheat Engine to that folder. Then select the table (usually processname.ct)
  7. Once the table is loaded, if there is a script, just check it.
  8. ALT+TAB back to the game and have fun.
So, if the steps above did not solve your problem, could you elaborate a little bit (previous poster "Rebelicious" never did):
  • Are you using the version from GoG?
  • which Version of DOSBox does it use?
  • what exactly did you do to use the table?
  • and more important, what exactly does not work?
  • if a script can not be activated, do a right click on the entry and tell me the error text
Just reinstalled Eye1 and table seems to work fine.

best regards,
Marc

Hi Marc,

Apologies if it appears to be trolling, most definintely isn't.

I can run the cheat engine and load it fine. Running versiopn 7.2 and the DOS box version (from GOG 0.74-2.1) is the same as what you have mentioned.

What I'm struggling with is the actual use of the cheat table. Have all the options there but can't figure out how to for example change the strength value for a character. I click on Character 1 which opens the sub table with all stats etc. Not so much that "it doesn't work" and moreso that I'm not sure how to work it.

Thanks

Hi MightyAtom,

ah okay, now I've got it.

Ok, if the displayed values are correct (meaning: the values in Cheat Engine are equal to the ones displayed in the game) you can simply
  1. make a double-click on a value
  2. select an entry and press enter
  3. mark multiple entries and press enter to change them all at once
in both ways you can enter a new value and the new value will be automatically be reflected in the game.
But: to actually view the changed values, you'll have to close the character stats view and open it again, because if the character data sheet it already open, the game has read the values and does not update the display.

Just tried it and it worked, see [Link] :)

Hope this helps,
Marc

That's pretty easy. The challenge I'm now having is that it doesn't want to populate anything in the values. I'm pretty sure I've loaded everything ok as I've used cheat engine with other games with no problem. Just feel like I'm missing a key step. [Link]

Grabbed the new table.Tells me I have an older version of the cheat engine but the newest is only for Patreons at the moment. WIll that make a difference? Otherwise I am sure I'm missing a step as it's still not populating. Do I need to point it to an address to get it starting?

Nope, have not used any features of 7.3. - the 7.2 is quite fine for it.

The only thing you have to do is to attach it to the game and check the "Automatic Memory Address Finder". Expand Character(s) and jump back into the games window. The values in CE should automatically fill with the correct values. Best hint is if you see the character's name.

if this does not work, the problem begins to get funny. In this case, can you send me your savegame? (should not make any difference, but I have no clue what else to try)
