Avatar Size?

I know Avatars can be 500x500 and they do get resized down a bit, but is there a more preferred size. With differeent skins and all things could look different? I'm using the default ugly old forum skin because it is the most functional for me, and the larger sizes cause my short forum posts to get much larger than necessary. I've got my Avatar down to 150x1xx and it seems okay, but 250x2xx was causing issues.

So out of politeness for other users, and not just what the forum maximum is, what does everyone think is the best maximum size to use? For those using other skins, do they stretch the posts more vertically still?

One of the things i like about phpbb is the massive avatar sizes. XF restricted them to 90x90 and increasing them anymore messed up the theme completely.

I am not sure what would be the preferred size
