So I've tried it, and I can get the sections open (Script - Session is active as is Pointer - Session and the stuff under it). But everything just shows as ??

Yes, I've done that. Made a basic skeleton, released it, and took control.

Okay, so I was hitting the Activate once I was in game, not when I was in the tower room before you start. That was likely the issue.

I tried to follow your steps, but the script does not work anymore for me.

You can utilize that without a table, just use CE normally without loading a table, start the game, send your cat out to get stuff and when he picks up a couple of the items you need, just go into CE plug in the ammount you have and start a new search now go back into the game send your cat out once again for a few more items, then after once again go into CE do one more search with the compare to first scan box checked and pay attention to any numbers that have changed.

I'm sure theres a easier way to do this, I just haven't learned about it yet.
