The ability pointers are off, I believe.
They're not off. It's just a funky way Larion coded things. Since you can start with a -8 and theoretically an attribute shouldn't be lower than that, they set -8 to be 0. So 0 is the lowest value you can have (8), and you just go up from there (1=9, 2=10, etc).
You then also have to count for the +1/+2 the character has applied. So for instance, my sorcerer has a stat spread of 8,14,16,10,12,18. I put my +1 into con and +2 into cha. So the table will read my attributes as 0, 6, 7, 2, 4, 6 which translates to 8,14,15,19,12,16 and the +1/+2 gets applied AFTER base attributes to raise it. When you're modifying a character's attributes you need to keep that in mind. You can tell which attributes were raised by looking at the character sheet in-game. The boosted attributes have D20 symbols surrounding the numbers. You can't tell which is +1 and which is +2, but from what I can tell, the +2 is always the NPC's primary stat.
