That's the way it has to work due to the coding of the game. You have to fight 2 battles for it to level you up from the previous battle. Thanks DrummerIX. I've actually gone through multiple battles which is when I noticed the characters weren't levelling up. I'll try again with the newest version...

DrummerIX, it seems that when I use the EXP multiplier, it seems to work on battle screen, however when I return in-game none of the EXP earned was applied as a result none of the characters level up - until I disable the EXP multiplier altogether.
