Simply turning off the Add Money option allowed me to pick up items (while keeping the cool million in my inventory).

I just wanted to say that I'm a moron with no prowess for actually working this stuff, but you all - especially SunBeam - are awesome for figuring out this puzzle, and I really appreciate it.
